R44 Cockpit Mount for GoPro Camera

It’s pretty basic — if you can think upside down.

The other day I received yet another request for information about how I mount GoPro cameras on my R44 helicopter. For various reasons, I don’t like to share details about certain mounting techniques. But this one asked about my cockpit mount, which offers a view from the back of the cockpit through the front windows — with limited views out the side windows, too. The pictures throughout this post show some good examples.

This is, by far, my most basic mount. It doesn’t require any special equipment — just one of the flat adhesive mounts that come with a GoPro camera, a white vibration isolator (which I think still comes with a GoPro camera), and the camera’s case.

Stick one of the adhesive mounts on the black headset holder. Then attach the camera and push in one of the white vibration isolators. This picture shows what it should look like:

If you’re looking for a way to do this — with this view — without using an adhesive mount, I can’t help you.

A few points about this setup:

  • Cherry Drying Cockpit View
    I get up close and personal with wind machines when I fly cherries.

    The camera is mounted inverted. That means that you probably want to use the camera Setup options to set the camera for Upside Down shooting. Otherwise, you’ll need to invert the video/images on your computer before use.

  • You’ll need to estimate the angle for the camera. For best results, you’ll want to get some of the ceiling as well as some of the back seat area.
  • Don’t forget the white vibration isolator. If you didn’t get one with your kit, buy a few to have on hand.
  • You definitely want to make that thumb screw as tight as possible so the camera doesn’t wobble up and down during flight. I keep a philips screwdriver in my GoPro kit just for that purpose.
  • You won’t be able to open the camera door on the back when the camera is pointed the right direction. You’ll have to unscrew it enough to angle it forward to get the door open and pop the camera out.
  • If you mount it properly, you should still have access to the headset jacks when the camera is in position.
  • Remove the headsets and cords from any seat that isn’t occupied. Headsets on the hooks in back may appear in the image. Hanging cords up front look ugly.
  • Cameras Spoil the View
    Some people really like to take pictures during a flight.

    If people are sitting in the back and you want good video out through the cabin, tell them to keep their arms, cameras, etc. out of the view. (The folks on the flight shown here took photos/videos during the entire trip — and I have the video to prove it.)

  • 16:9 resolutions will feature more of what’s going on outside the helicopter; 4:3 resolutions will show more of the ceiling and back seats.
  • Good exposure

    The best exposures for outside views are when you’re flying away from the sun. Flying toward the sun yields crappy images.

If you have a GoPro Hero 2 and want cockpit sound, you can use a skeleton case and connect an audio cable to an empty headset jack. I’ll let you figure out how to do that on your own. (You can’t expect me to give away all my secrets, can you?)

As far as stability goes, I’m pretty happy with the quality of the video. There will always be some vibration in a helicopter — unless you use a gyro — but the video I got with this setup was completely usable. I just haven’t used it for anything yet. I really do need to put together a movie with all the GoPro video I’ve shot up here in Washington.

There is another solution for cockpit use if you’re more interested in showing the pilot/passengers than the view. I have had some good success with the suction cup mount on the inside of the cockpit bubble (passenger seat only; you don’t want that thing falling down on the pilot’s side and getting caught up in the pedals) and also hanging from that silly window above the front passenger seat. Again, the camera is inverted for both of these methods. For video, to minimize vibration, you want to mount it as close to the airframe as possible. This kind of mount is not as stable as the one illustrated earlier. I use it quite a bit for still photos when I have something interesting to show, like Santa or a golf ball drop.

A few things to remember when mounting a GoPro — or any device — inside the helicopter cockpit.

  • Make sure it’s secure. You don’t want objects coming loose during flight, especially if a door is off.
  • Don’t mount anything where it could interfere with the pilot’s controls. That includes mounting where it could fall into the pilot’s controls.
  • Remove the dual controls if anything is mounted in the front passenger side. You might also want to cover where the pedals go to make sure nothing can fall in there.

Tips for Aerial Photographers

The pilot really does know best.

The other day, I had a very unusual aerial photography job. I was hired to take two videographers on an air-to-air photo shoot of the world’s largest paper airplane.

There were a few things about this gig that bugged me and, frankly, it all had to do with the primary videographer on the shoot. He did things that severely limited our ability to get the shots he needed and rendered some of my equipment non-functional after the flight.

I’d like to discuss this in a bit of detail in an effort to help other videographers understand how to make the most of an aerial video shoot.

Bad Seating Position

This was an air-to-air photo shoot requiring me to fly in formation with another helicopter that was towing an 800-pound, 45-foot “paper” airplane. (I put paper in quotes because there was some cardboard and tape and metal spars for stabilization, but it was mostly paper.) When the other helicopter dropped the airplane, I’d have to chase the airplane down to the ground. We had no idea how fast the airplane would fly or whether it would fly smoothly or erratically. And, of course, the other helicopter would be dangling a 150-foot long line, so it was vital that I didn’t fly right beneath it after the drop.

The other pilot and I agreed that I’d form up on him. What that means is that he basically ignores me and I have sole responsibility for maintaining a safe distance from him. He’s the “lead,” I’m the “wing.”

In order to maintain a safe distance, I have to be able to see the other aircraft at all times. Seems pretty simple, huh? Can’t maintain a safe distance from something you can’t see.

And this is where the problem arose. In order for me to see the other aircraft, I need a direct line of sight to it. I can’t see through a videographer’s body.

I asked the videographer to sit in the back, behind me. This would give both of us the same view. This is how I prefer to work. It enables me to keep the helicopter in position for the shot. I’ve done this on numerous photo shoots with fast-moving targets. It works.

But the videographer refused to even consider sitting in the back seat. He had to sit in the front. This forced me, in the right seat, to fly with the other aircraft on my left. The videographer’s body obstructed my view to the left toward the other aircraft.

Although I was able to see the other aircraft most of the time, there were two or three instances when I could not see it. To stay safe until I could regain a visual on it, I banked away from where I thought it might be.

The videographer was not happy about this. “Get closer,” he’d say. And I’d reply, “I can’t get closer to something I can’t see.”

On a go-forward basis, I will not allow a photographer or videographer to block my view on any air-to-air photo shoot. If he can’t sit behind me so we can both see the other aircraft, I won’t do the flight. Period.

Poor Choice of Equipment

Two years ago, I spent over $10,000 on a Moitek gyro-stabilized video camera mount. This system uses three Kenyon KS-8 gyros to remove virtually all vibration from a camera while bearing all the weight of the camera equipment and giving the videographer a wide range of motion left, right, up, and down. No, it’s not as flexible as a hand-held camera, but as long as the videographer can keep the subject in the frame, he’ll get smooth video of it.

In an effort to recoup the cost of this system — and compensate me for the 30 minutes of setup and 30 minutes of tear-down time required for use — I charge $500 per day.

I offered this to the client though the booking company they were working with. They declined. I assumed they preferred to hand-hold the camera.

When I arrived for the shoot, I discovered that the video guy had rented a Tyler Mini Gyro. This device has three smaller gyros mounted on a short monopod. The camera is mounted on top. The videographer usually places the monopod between his legs on the seat or on his lap while shooting. This stabilizes the video but limits motion in that the monopod base needs to be repositioned to make a significant vertical change of view. Without moving the base, the videographer would need to lean out into the slipstream to look down or lean back into the cockpit to look up. This isn’t always possible.

Apparently, the videographer was relying on me to keep in perfect formation with the other aircraft to prevent his need to move the camera. This was not possible, as discussed above. So when the paper airplane was released and it began its steep descent, he was unable to stay locked onto it with his camera.

I think using my mount or hand-holding the camera — possibly with a simpler gyro mount such a Micro-Gyro Mount offered by Blue Sky Aerials would have really benefited him. And I find it odd that although his equipment included a very costly RED camera, he had to rely on a rented gyro stabilizer.

Tampering with My Equipment

As discussed in numerous places throughout this blog, I’m a big fan of GoPro cameras and have three of my own that I sometimes use in flight. The folks from GoPro were at this event and they rigged up a bunch of their cameras all over the paper airplane and lift helicopter. They were thrilled that I already had good mounting solutions and loaned me a Hero 2 for one of my mount positions. So my helicopter had three GoPros, one of which was not mine, each of which had one of my 16GB cards in it. My arrangement with the GoPro guys was that after the flight, they’d pull video off each card and give the card back to me for my own personal (but limited) use.

Note that I mounted all the cameras with the GoPro guys. The video guy did not participate in this at all.

We did the flight and landed out in the desert near where the paper airplane had crashed. They did some video of the recovery on the ground. When we got back to my helicopter, I noticed that one of the GoPro mounts was missing its camera. I assumed it had fallen off and was very surprised because I know from experience how solid that mount is. That’s when the videographer told me he’d already removed them. Sure enough, all three mounts had been tampered with and all three cameras were gone.

Back at base, I went to the GoPro guys to find my cameras and the missing pieces of my mounts. They stuck to their word and I got everything back — except a piece from each of two mounts: a vibration isolator and a thumbscrew. Without these two pieces, two of the mounts are non-functional.

I don’t know who has them: the videographer or the GoPro guys. I suspect it’s the videographer. He likely put them in his pocket when he disassembled the mounts and forgot to give them back. (He also forgot to return a harness I provided for the shoot. That’s being shipped back to me this week.)

It is a Federal offense to tamper with equipment on an aircraft. Obviously, I’m not going to call the FAA to give this guy grief. But I will make sure it doesn’t happen again.

The Pilot Really Does Know Best

When you hire an experienced pilot for an aerial photo or video shoot, you need to fully communicate the needs of the mission before the flight and listen to the pilot’s advice. You need to work with your pilot to make a team to get the job done.

I know for a fact that I could have flown in perfect formation with the other aircraft if I could have seen it out my own window. I have done this before — not only with aircraft but with cars and trucks on the ground on tracks and on desert race courses, and with boats on lakes and rivers. A pilot cannot be expected to fly in formation with something he can’t see.

I know this videographer was unhappy with the results he got. But who is really to blame? I don’t think it’s me.

Hovering with the Balloons

Just a quick post after an unusual photo flight.

I needed a bunch of photographs that could clearly illustrate how a change altitude affects the perspective of an aerial photo scene. So I armed my helicopter with a battery of GoPro cameras, set them up to snap an image every 2 seconds, and went flying at dawn.

For about 90 minutes.

On the way back, I spotted a number of hot air balloons in the sky northeast of Deer Valley Airport. This isn’t anything unusual; the balloons are up every morning for the first hour or two of the day. But what was unusual is my attempt to capture images of the balloons.

Instead of satisfying myself with the usual fly by images, this time, I climbed to about 1,000 feet AGL, pointed the helicopter southwest toward the balloons, and brought it into a hover. And held it there for about a minute.

While I was hovering there, facing the balloons, I got a weird feeling, as if I were a bird trying to join a flock. I could imitate their motion (or apparent lack thereof), but I wasn’t one of them.

Anyway, this is one of the shots I captured, cropped for better presentation. As you can see, there was one balloon at a higher altitude but most of the others were lower. Can you see them all in this shot? I count seven.

I couldn’t do anything about the distance. The GoPro cameras have a wide angle lens, making everything seem farther away than it really is. If I got any closer, the folks in the closest balloon — which was also the one higher than me — may have freaked out. (If you think airplane pilots hate helicopters, you should talk to a balloon pilot one day.)

This isn’t, by far, the best photo shot this morning. But it’s the one I thought of from the moment I lowered the helicopter’s collective to descend back toward Deer Valley until the moment I first viewed it on my computer.

I really do need to spend some time in a balloon soon.

The Fruits of My Labor…

…or why I love my work as an aerial photography pilot.

Regular readers know that one of my jobs is as a helicopter pilot. Sure, my little company offers tours and day trips from Phoenix in the winter and dries cherries in Washington State in the summer, but my favorite kind of flying is for aerial photography.

To me, there’s nothing more rewarding than being a pilot for a talented still or video aerial photographer. These are the people who not only understand basic photographic concepts such as light and composition and exposure, but who also know what a helicopter can do and how they can use it as a tool to get amazing images of the world around us.

In August 2010, I had the privilege of working again with Mike Reyfman, a regular client, over Lake Powell in northern Arizona/southern Utah. He was there for the AirPano Project, capturing images that would become interactive 360° aerial panoramas, as well as still photos around the lake.

He emailed me yesterday to let me know that the Lake Powell Panoramas had finally been put online. There are four of them, including one shot over Reflection Canyon (see screen grab below). Each image is interactive, drag in the image to pan and zoom. You can click on the helicopter icons to switch from one viewpoint to the next. Here’s where you can find them.

Aerial photo work is challenging, especially with a demanding photographer on board who knows exactly what he wants. Mike is one of those photographers. Not only does he know what time of day he wants to shoot, but he provides instructions regarding shooting location, direction, and altitude. For the panoramic shots, I need to get into an out of ground effect hover, sometimes as high as 3,000 feet above the ground, and hold it there for 5 minutes or more. This isn’t easy in my little R44, especially in windy conditions.

But it’s worth it, as Mike’s panoramic images and other shots prove.

I find it especially rewarding work, though. Although I didn’t create the incredible images the photographers on board make, I feel that I was instrumental in making those images possible. After all, my helicopter and I were part of the photographer’s equipment — almost like a tripod. Surely to say that the image would not exist without us isn’t too far from the truth.

And so despite the challenges and the relative dangers, I love flying aerial photographers. And I love seeing the work they create when they fly with me.

More GoPro Camera Tests, More Aerial Photos and Videos

Another chapter in my never ending saga: any excuse to fly.

Early this week, it rained.

That might not seem like a big deal to most folks, but it rains very seldom in Arizona. In fact, I hadn’t experienced a good rainstorm since my drive back from Washington state in October.

This week, it was cold and rainy for two days in a row. With rain comes three things:

  • Clouds, which make our normally plain blue sky more interesting and give it depth.
  • Cleansing, by which I mean that the dust is washed off the desert rocks and plants, making their colors more vibrant.
  • New growth in the desert, which makes everything look just a tiny bit greener than it otherwise would.

You need to be a desert dweller to really appreciate these things.

There’s nothing I like more than to go flying over the desert right after a good rainstorm. So on Wednesday, as the storm clouds moved north and blue sky started to appear again, I loaded up my GoPro cameras and mounts, hopped in the car, and drove up to Deer Valley Airport, where my helicopter is living part-time this season. When I arrived just before 9 AM, my helicopter was sitting out on the pavement, ready for me to preflight, set up my cameras, and go.

The Camera Setup

I took my time about setting up the three GoPros. I have three different models and I use each one for a different purpose.

  • GoPro HD Hero2 Professional – With its sound-in port and better lens and recording capabilities, I normally mount it on the helicopter’s nose as the “nosecam” and connect it to an audio-out port I had put into the helicopter a few years back. It captures not only intercom communications, but all radio communications. Basically, anything I hear in my headset is also sent out through that port to my GoPro. Here’s an example of an image from the video on this camera, shot at 720p:

  • GoPro Hero HD Original – I mount this between the helicopter’s two back seats, inverted, to capture a wide-angle view of what’s going on inside the helicopter and beyond. This “cockpitcam” view works fine with passengers, but it doesn’t give a close-up view of the instrument panel. For that, I need to mount the camera forward, on the bar between the two front seats. Here’s a view from the camera as I had it mounted Wednesday, also shot at 720p video:

  • GoPro Hero 960 – Because I haven’t been exactly thrilled with the 1080p video coming out of my original GoPro HD Hero, when I decided to invest in a second one, I went with the cheaper model, which can’t shoot 1080p video. Instead, it shoots up to 1280×960. I like the widescreen format, so I shoot 1280×720. I saved about $100. On Wednesday, I used a new skid mount and set it up to snap a 2592 × 1944 still image every 10 seconds. (In the 20-20 vision of hindsight, I should have set it up for every 2 seconds; 6 shots per minute isn’t quite enough when you’re cruising at 100 miles per hour.) Here’s a sample image from that “skidcam”:

So to summarize: I set up the helicopter as a camera mount for three different cameras: 2 shooting video and 1 shooting stills.

The Flight and Some Photos

I turned on all the cameras, climbed into the cockpit, and started up. Five minutes later, I was overflying Deer Valley Airport at 500 feet AGL, northbound. Here’s a nice shot of the airport from the nosecam:

The beauty of all this was that with this setup, I’m able to capture images from three cameras without having to even think about any of them. Absolutely no distraction for me, allowing me to keep my full attention on my primary duties as a pilot: aviate, navigate, and communicate.

The flight was not quite what I had in mind. I was hoping to overfly Lake Pleasant and get all the way to Wickenburg. But as I neared Lake Pleasant, I saw low clouds over the lake. There was mountain obscuration to the northwest — which means the clouds were pretty darn low, since those mountains aren’t exactly lofty peaks. Here’s a nose cam image of the marina at Lake Pleasant near the dam; you can see the low clouds at the north end of the lake:

I wasn’t very interested in getting images and video shot in overcast conditions. So I decided to head east, where the sky was clearer and sunlight was filtering through to the desert floor.

There was a balloon flying southeast of Lake Pleasant and I tried to get some shots of it with the skidcam. Trouble is, the GoPro’s very wide angle lens exaggerates the distances. If I wanted a good shot of the balloon where it looked close, I’d have to get much closer to the balloon. While I think I could have gotten closer safely, I didn’t want to give the balloon operator or his passengers heart failure so I stayed clear. This is the best I could get; again, a shot every 2 seconds would have given me more to choose from.

As I flew east, the two front-facing cameras were pointing toward but not exactly into the sun. GoPro cameras get their best images when the sun is at an angle of at least 60 degrees from the lens. According to the LightTrac app on my iPhone, at about 9:45 AM the sun was at about 140 degrees. I was flying at about 90°, so the sun was at 50° angle to the front-facing cameras. At the same time, it was at a 40° angle to the skidcam, which was facing almost due south. (Obviously, I didn’t look up the angles while flying.) As a result, the images from this leg of my flight were pretty disappointing. Here’s an example from the cockpitcam as I flew over the intersection of I-17 and Carefree Highway:

I flew all the way out to the Verde River and then headed up the river as far as Bartlett Dam. The two photos near the beginning of this post shot nosecam and skidcam views. Since more gray skies and low clouds covered Bartlett Lake, I turned around and headed south. The cockpitcam shot near the beginning of this post shows my view as I headed approximately southwest. After a tiny bit of shallow canyon flying (see nosecam photo below), I headed toward Scottsdale where sun, low clouds, and rocky outcroppings made for interesting views.

I got a nice shot of Pinnacle Peak from the skidcam at several altitudes for use in a book project I’m working on.

By that point, I’d been in the air for about an hour and thought I had enough footage to test my setup thoroughly. I headed back to Deer Valley. The one mistake I made was that I flew along side a power line, with the power line on my right — right in the view for my skidcam. This was very unfortunate because the camera was facing north at this point and could have captured a lot of nice footage. Instead, all the footage features the damn wires.

In all, I got just over 300 photographs and 2 hours of video — an hour from each camera. Quite a bit of it is useable and will likely appear in edited video content I produce in the future.

I plan to try shooting video from the skidcam. I could see it from my window and checked it a few times in flight to see how much it was vibrating — it didn’t seem to be vibrating much at all. Of course, you can never tell until you shoot the video and see the results. So that’ll be my next test, probably tomorrow.

A Final Note about the Camera Setup

I took photos of all my cameras as they were mounted before beginning the flight. I hesitate, however, to share them or provide detailed information. Although I know many pilots who regularly mount cameras on the outside of their aircraft, it’s one thing to talk about it and another to document it with photos for the world to see. I’m very confident in two things:

  • Any camera I mount on the outside of my aircraft will not fall off. I use several safeguarding measures to ensure this. I am positive I will not lose a camera.
  • None of the mounting locations affects the aerodynamics of my aircraft. In other words, it flies just as well with the cameras attached as it does without them.

These are the only things that should concern a pilot or anyone overseeing that pilot’s activities.
