Another video from the Flying M Air YouTube channel.

I was unexpectedly called out to do a cherry drying flight on Saturday morning. Here’s footage from the nose cam with narration added in production.

A Quick Trip Home – By Helicopter

Another video from the FlyingMAir YouTube channel.

Since last week’s video was so long, I thought I’d treat you to a shorter one this week.

This is the first of several videos I’ll be releasing from a flight with a friend from the Wenatchee, WA, area to Twisp, WA. In this video, I’ve come down to fetch the helicopter at its summer landing zone and realized that I’ve forgotten something important at home. (For the life of me, I can’t remember what it was now.) Rather than make the 30 minute round-trip drive back up to my house — four miles each way on mostly gravel roads — I decided to just fly up, park the helicopter in my side yard, shut down, and run inside to get what I need. That’s what this little video is all about.

Look for subsequent videos in this series in upcoming weeks. My cameras didn’t all behave, but I’m pretty sure I got cockpit POV footage for each part of the trip. We’ll see!

Stop for Five Minutes and Listen

Relax with me and see if you can hear what I hear.

I woke up this morning to another beautiful summer day. It was still cool outside and the sun’s first light turned the landscape around me that odd golden color I only get to see at first and last light. I took my coffee out onto the deck to enjoy a break before hustling down to the garage to load up my pups and kayak for a few hours of paddling around the Wenatchee and Columbia Rivers confluence with a friend.

The early morning quiet — which wasn’t exactly quiet — struck me. I wish I could bottle it up and share it with friends. Then I realized I could. My tripod was handy, along with the dead cat protected microphone I used with my iPhone for various video work. It took two minutes to set it all up. I recorded 5 minutes and 15 seconds of my morning bliss.

The news got you down? Worries about the economy, your job, the virus, politics? Feeling stressed and angry?

Slow down. Stop. Take a deep breath. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage and step out into a place away from the news, mobile devices, and other people. Look around. Listen. Become one with your surroundings.

Five minutes will make a real difference in your day.

And if you can’t find the right spot for your own five minutes, come on back here. You can borrow mine any time you like.

Helicopter Flight to a New Landing Zone

Another cockpit POV video from the Flying M Air YouTube channel.

Come fly with me as I reposition my helicopter from the fuel pumps at Wenatchee Airport to a brand new cherry drying landing zone. It’s a short flight and there’s no helicopter engine/rotor sound, but there’s plenty of radio chatter and rain on the windscreen. Also: two landings for the price of one!

A quick note here: if you noticed that the opening credit have a new look, it’s because I created this video with new video editing software: Filmora Pro. I needed software that could edit 360° videos and Filmora can. I’ll be switching to it as my primary video editing package over the next few months. It takes time to learn these things, so I’ll be fine-tuning along the way. For some reason, the FlyingMAir “theme song” isn’t playing; I need to troubleshoot that.

Helicopter Commute: Airport to Home

Another video from the FlyingMAir YouTube channel.

SIT ON THE NOSE OF MY OLD HELICOPTER as I from the airport in Wenatchee across the Columbia River to my home under construction in Malaga.

This “Throwback Thursday” video is the whole flight from June 2014. I’ve just refueled after cherry drying and have gone home to wait for the next call out. It’s a beautiful day with great reflections in the river. I tell you a little about the area and my home in a narration added in editing.

About Me and the Helicopter

  • I have been flying since 1998. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time (as of 2019) is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
  • The helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II — the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. This was my first R44, which was lost in a crash back in 2018. You can learn more about R44s here: https://robinsonheli.com/r44-specifications/ I owned this helicopter and now own another one very much like it, but blue. I’ve owned a helicopter since 2000.

About the Video

  • This video was recorded in 2014 with a GoPro Hero 3 camera mounted on the nose of the helicopter. Audio comes from the camera’s built-in speaker and has been incorporated into this video at 25% normal volume.
  • Narration was added using a Røde Podcaster microphone (https://amzn.to/2IFnbNr) connected to a Macintosh. I recorded the narration while I was watching the video in the editing software.
  • The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: https://www.telestream.net/screenflow/overview.htm
  • The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed “Dr. Mac.” You can find him here: http://www.boblevitus.com/

I try to drop cockpit POV videos every Sunday morning and “extras” with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. (Some channel members and patrons get early access to some of these videos.) I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. Subscribe so you don’t miss anything new! And tell your friends. The more subscribers I have, the more motivated I am to keep producing videos like this one.
